What is Microneedling?
Microneedling uses tiny surgical needles to pierce the skin at specific depths in a precise pattern. This technique creates a controlled injury that triggers the body’s natural wound healing process, stimulating cell proliferation and causing the formation of new collagen and elastin.

FAQ's
-
What is electronic / automated Microneedling?Automated micro-needling (also known as Collagen Induction Therapy or CIT) is a new innovation in aesthetic medicine for treating the appearance of fine lines, acne scars, texture, pore size and improvement of the skin’s overall appearance. During this procedure, our electonic device, eDermastamp® is used to create controlled micro-injuries to the skin in order to produce collagen and elastin. Automated micro-needling also creates superficial micro-channels through which topical gels, creams and serums can be penetrated deeper into the dermis to help improve the appearance of the skin.
-
How does Microneedling work? The handheld electronic device is moved along the skin and penetrates upper layers of the skin to a depth of up to 1.5mm to create tiny needle wounds. This signals the body to respond by releasing a cascade of growth factors and produces collagen and elastin fibers. As a result, the skin becomes fuller, thus reducing the appearance of scars, lines, and wrinkles.
-
What conditions does microneedling treat? Some of the conditions that microneedling is known to improve include: mild to moderate acne scarring, fine lines and wrinkles, sagging skin, skin texture, pore size, stretch marks and sun damage.
-
What does the procedure involve?1. It begins with cleaning and numbing the skin. We use Zenza brand 5% Lidocane. 2. Once the area is fully numbed (approx 25 mins) the numbing cream is washed off and we prep the skin with 70% alcohol. 3. Our electronic microneedling device is then used to create tiny micro wounds in the skin by moving across it in circular motions. 4. We adjust the depth of the device as we move to different areas. This takes approximately 25 mins. 5. After the procedure is complete, we apply a soothing antioxidant mask for 25 mins. 6. You are sent home with a home care kit including hyaluronic acid and a day & night cream to hydrate, heal and protect the skin.
-
How long does the treatment last?In total, our treatment takes approx 1hr and 30 mins. A treatment session itself only lasts between 20 and 30 minutes depending on how many areas need to be treated. However, you must wait for the numbing cream to take effect, have your treatment area disinfected, and must wait for the soothing and healing mask to dry following the treatment session. Expect to spend at least an hour or two from start to finish.

What can I expect immediately following treatement?Your skin will be red and feel hot and tight. It will look and feel a little like a sunburn. This is all normal. Apply hyaluronic serum provided throughout the day for relief. The redness subsides after the first 24-48 hours, but it is normal to remain red for longer. Some people do not get red at all. This all depends on the individual. You will notice peeling of the skin a few days post-treatment. This is normal and expected and is a result of increased cellular turnover. Your skin can look worse before it looks better. Be patient, it will improve. Microneedling isn't an instant fix. Your skin takes time to rejuvenate. The weeks following treatment is when your skin is doing all the hard work. This is why it's important to pay extra care to it during recovery time. Sunscreen is always important, but it is vital in the weeks following your treatment. Your skin will require extra protection and care to help it generate healthy new skin cells.
-
What is the downtime after the procedure?Inflammation of the skin is temporary and reduces greatly within a few hours. It may remain slightly pink for 2 to 4 days after treatment. Using hyaluronic acid after the procedure can help reduce inflammation. A physical (mineral) sunscreen with a minimum of SPF 30 is highly recommended after 2 days. It is ideal to refrain from makeup for the first 5 days, but if you need to wear makeup, it should be limited to mineral makeup and is not recommended to wear until 2 days after treatment.
-
How do i care for my skin immediately after the treatment? It is recommended to use only Dermaroller® hyaluronic acid (ampules) during the first 24hrs. Do not wash your face for the first 24 hrs. During the first 2 days (48hrs), refrain from exercise, saunas, hot tubs, and tanning-beds. Avoid direct sunlight for at least 2 days (48hrs). Your skin will be very sensitive to the effects of sun and ultraviolet light. Sunscreen is not recommended until after the 2 days are up, in which case you should wear a physical/non-chemical sun-screen with a minimum SPF 25 every day. Avoid touching your treated skin unnecessarily. Always wash hands or use gloves before touching treated skin. Avoid makeup for the first 24 hours. If you must use makeup within the first 24 hours, only use a 100% pure mineral powder makeup. After the first 24hrs, you will start the aftercare regimen provided. Follow the regimen for 4 days following treatment or until you run out of product. As long as your skin’s redness and inflammation have subsided, you can go back to your regular skincare routine.
-
How many treatments will I need? The amount of treatments needed will depend on the individual what conditions are being treated and their goals. Some patients only require a single treatment once per year to achieve optimal results. However, it is recommended for most patients to receive a series of 3-4 treatments spaced about 6-8 weeks apart. For patients with deep wrinkles, advanced photo-aging, stretch marks or acne scars it is recommended to receive 6-8 sessions at 6-week intervals.
-
When will I see results?Usually, patients will notice an immediate “glow” to their skin and visible changes to the skin develop over the course of several days and weeks. Microneedling isn't an instant fix. It requires patience. Your skin is continuing to work it's magic after your skin has healed. Results can continue to improve up to 6 months after a treatment as collagen production continues.
-
What areas can be treated? The eDermastamp® can be used on all parts of the body, including the: face, neck, décolleté, arms, hands, legs, abdomen and back.
-
Does the micro-needling treatment hurt?Treatment is not very painful because the needles used are so fine and your skin is numbed during treatment to help with any discomfort. However, some notice certain areas of the face are more sensitive and can be somewhat uncomfortable. The upper lip is generally a more sensitive area.
-
Am I a good candidate for microneedling?Microneedling is ideal for those wishing to improve the appearance of superficial acne scars, minor burn scars, and other post-traumatic scars, or for those wanting to improve minor skin imperfections including fine lines, wrinkles, photo-damage, skin laxity, scarring or uneven skin tone/texture. It is safe for all skin types and tones.
-
Who is not a good candidate for Microneedling?Microneedling needs to be performed on skin that is intact and free of inflammation. Microneedling is causing "micro-injuries" in the skin. These micro-injuries are necessary for stimulating collagen production. So, if you have a fever, active rash, inflammation or infection, your body should be spending all its energy fighting off your current illness or condition. Those who have the following are not good candidates for microneedling. Active acne Sunburn Local infection such as herpes and warts Moderate to severe eczema Active rosacea Patients who get anti-coagulant therapy Skin conditions that have extreme keloidal tendency (keloid scars) Cancer patients who have chemo/radiotherapy Patients who are pregnant or breastfeeding Patients under the age of 18 Those who have used Accutane® within 6 months Have open wounds or skin infections in the area Have had radiation treatment within 1 year Those with extremely sensitive skin.
-
How long do the results last?Microneedling treatments “remove” the visible manifestations caused by the underlying condition. The results from your first round of treatment will last between four and six weeks after they have finalized. Thus, you should expect to come in for a follow-up treatment eight to 12 weeks after your first treatment. Keep in mind, however, that you may not need to come in so soon. You may find that the results of treatment last longer depending on a number of factors. When scars and stretch marks are treated the results generally are permanent and long lasting.
-
What are the common side effects following microneedling?Skin will be pink or red and may feel warm, like mild sunburn, tight and itchy, which usually subside in 12 to 24 hrs Minor flaking or dryness of the skin, with scab formation in rare cases. Crusting, discomfort, bruising and swelling may occur. Pinpoint bleeding. It is possible to have a cold sore flare if you have a history of outbreaks. Freckles may lighten temporarily or permanently disappear in treated areas.
-
Can I have microneedling if I am prone to cold sores? You can still get microneedling if you are prone to cold sores. You must take an anti-viral medication such as "Valtrex" 2-3 days prior to your appointment, and after. However, you cannot receive a microneedling treatment if you have any active cold sores in the area being treated.
-
What should I avoid prior to a microneedling treatment? Before your microneedling session, you will need to avoid anything that exacerbates the issue of dry skin. This includes medication such as Accutane®, which will need to be avoided for 6 months before your microneedling procedure. Any topical drying agents (retinol, benzoyl peroxide, hydroquinoine etc.) should be avoided 5 days prior. You will also want to avoid any laser procedures or anything that removes hair from the treatment area, including shaving, for 5-7 days before treatment.
-
I have Rosacea. Am I still a candidate for microneedling?Yes and no. Inflammatory rosacea is not always compatible with microneedling, as skin types with this condition may not be able to tolerate the microneedling procedure. You may be able to have microneedling treatments when the skin is calm, and not during active flare ups and inflammation. For any of these concerns, you will want to let your provider check your skin to determine the best course of action.
